Petrie’s Electronics needs to improve its marketing and customer retention by increasing customer loyalty. The marketing department is in need of a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. Upper management has selected No Customer Escapes as the top Information Technology project this year.

1. In Week 4, we finish the second phase of the system development life cycle (SDLC), System Analysis. We have gathered detailed requirements for the CRM project and created Data Flow Diagrams (DFD) for our process modeling. Now we need to conceptually model our CRM system by reviewing Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERD) which will help next week in designing data bases in the third phase of the SDLC, System Design.

2. In order to finalize detailed requirements, we will need to structure the data collected. DFDs help model how data moves throughout our system; ERDs help us understand how data is related and structured. To aid our understand of ERDs, we need to understand the following.

b. Read the Petrie’s case study at the end of Chapter 7 to add to what we learned in previous weeks.

c. We have already gathered some requirements and constraints identified in PE Table 5-1 on page 150 of our textbook.

5. We will validate the preliminary ERD described in PE Table 7-1 on page 230. The Petrie’s Electronics Case in Chapter 7, on page 229�231, describes how you will validate requirements for the CRM project and update the ERD.

Review the data-flow diagrams you developed for questions in the Petrie’s Electronics case study at the end of Chapter 6 (or diagrams given to you by your instructor). Study the data flows and data stored on these diagrams and decide whether you agree with the team’s conclusion that the only six entity types needed are listed in the case and in Figure 7-1. If you disagree, define additional entity types, explain why they are necessary, and modify Figure 7-1 accordingly.
Again, review the DFDs you developed for the Petrie’s Electronics case (or those given to you by your instructor). Use these DFDs to identify the attributes of each of the six entities listed in this case plus any additional entities identified in your answer to Question 1. Write an unambiguous definition for each attribute. Then, redraw Figure 7-1 by placing the six (and additional) entities in this case on the diagram along with their associated attributes.
Using your answer to Question 2, designate which attribute or attributes form the identifier for each entity type. Explain why you chose each identifier.
Using your answer to Question 3, draw the relationships between entity types needed by the system. Remember, a relationship is needed only if the system wants data about associated entity instances. Give a meaningful name to each relationship. Specify cardinalities for each relationship and explain how you decided on each minimum and maximum cardinality on each end of each relationship. State any assumptions you made if the Petrie’s Electronics cases you have read so far and the answers to questions in these cases do not provide the evidence to justify the cardinalities you choose.
