The purpose of this paper is for you to practice visual critical thinking. Before you can discuss or understand an art work, you need to be able to describe it. In this assignment you will apply your knowledge of the formal elements (e.g. line, light, color, form, space, texture, pattern, & time) and the principles of design (Weight & Balance, Empahsis & Focal Point, Scale & Proportion, Repetition & Rhythm, Unity & Variety, and Economy & Ornamentation) in order to produce a detailed description of this painting.

Paper Length: 5-7 pages. Warning: if you can’t write 5–7 pages of description, you’re just not looking closely enough or writing in enough detail. Do not fill with fluff or biographical material from the Web. Trying reading the directions again and make sure you’ve address all the points. Part I (Objective Description & Analysis)
1) Start by stating the basics:
— What is the title of the work? Do you understand the title? Does the title describe the subject or object? Is the title,
perhaps, a pun or a word or phrase with multiple levels of meaning? You may wish to look up the words or the phrases just to be sure you’re not missing something.
— What materials and media were used? What factors (if any) might have influenced the choice of materials and media? How does the choice of materials and media help (or hinder) the overall effect of the work? What are the limitations of the medium? Has the artist made any attempt to breach the limitations of the medium?
— Who made it? When was it made?
— Was the work originally intended to be located somewhere specific (or was it made for someone specific)? Where is the work now and how did it come to be there? If known, you should start by describing the art work’s present context (e.g. a museum or church): the external lighting, framing, etc.
— Why was it made (for what reason or function)?
While not all of this information is known, you should make an effort to find out whatever you can.
2) Now begin your descriptive visual analysis by moving from general observations to specific observations. First, describe the work’s general style & specific content.
— Does the work fall into any general historical and/or stylistic category (e.g. cubism, expressionism)?
— Describe the genre of the work if possible. Is it history, still life, portraiture, landscape, animal, non-objective? — Is the subject or object of the work representational, abstract or non-objective?
— If representational, what has the artist re-presented? Is it successful?
— If it is abstract, to what degree does the artist abstract the subject/object? Describe the type/s of abstraction. — Can the subject or object be read in more than one way?
3) Now consider each of the “formal elements”, moving from the general to the specific:  Texture
o If possible, look closer at the surface treatment: Describe the actual and visual texture. Does the work deny or call attention to the materiality of its surface? How?
 Line
o How important is line in this work? Are the lines organized? If so, how?
o Characterize the lines of the work: are the classical / analytic or are the romantic / expressive? Why?
o Do the lines describe forms, shapes or both?
o Describe the qualities of at least the dominant types of line: are the lines primarily rectilinear or curvilinear?
Are the lines, thick or thin? Dark or light? Solid or broken? Heavy or soft? Can you see the brush strokes? o How do the qualities of line related to the subject or content of the work? How do the lines influence your
experience of the work?  Space & Perspective
o Are any perspective techniques used to create an illusion of internal or external space? Are there any distinct registers or planes that function to organize space (e.g. top to bottom and front to back)? How does this organization (or lack) of space affect the viewing experience?
o Do the figures appear to violate the frame or the surface? Has the artist made an attempt to create an illusion that suggests this is not just a two-dimensional object? If so, describe how.
 Form, Shape & Mass
o Is there any obvious orientation or symmetrical arrangement of figures or elements and motifs? If it is a
figural work, how many figures do you see (are they human and/or animal)? Describe any figure/s (e.g. Is/are the figures “recumbent”–e.g. lying on the back—or standing? Explain how the figure/s is/are dressed and arranged/posed? What is/are the figure/s doing (are they at rest or “in motion”)? Are the figures holding anything? If so, what?
o Are the dominant shapes, forms, and elements geometrical, biomorphic, or non-geometrical? Are the shapes and elements found objects, are they imitations of natural objects or created by the artist’s imagination?
o Describe the background. Does the background influence the viewing experience? What is the relationship between (back)ground and the figures, elements, and/or motifs? Is the relationship between figure and ground made clear, ambiguous, or non-existent?
 Light
o Is the lighting naturalistic or idealistic? Can you identify any particular lighting or modeling techniques (e.g. chiaroscuro, tenebrism)? Consider the relationship of the highlight and shadow: How do these characteristics affect the viewing experience?
 Color
o What type of color scheme is used (analogous, complementary, split-complement, triadic, tetradic?)
o Describe the palette (range of hues) and saturation / intensity.
o Does the choice of palette or color have any relationship with the subject or content of the work? How do
these color characteristics affect the viewing experience?  Time & Motion
o Does the work attempt to create any illusion of narrative or time? If so, where and how? Is there a sense of timelessness?
o Do the forms, elements or figures seem to move? Do the lines, forms, lighting, colors, lead the eye anywhere? o What formal techniques are used to suggest (or deny) time and motion?
4) Now evaluate the design and the “principles of design”, again moving from the general to the specific  Emphasis / Focal Point
o Does the work have a single focal point, multiple focal points, or is it afocal? Is the subject emphasized – or something else?
o Is there any relationship between perspective techniques and the emphasis and/or focal point?
o How does the presence or absence of emphasis / focal point/s influence your experience of the work?  Balance & Weight
o Consider the relation of the parts to the whole and to one another; describe the balance (or lack of) and any form of symmetry (or asymmetry), and mechanisms by which the parts may or may not be brought into a relationship with one another (e.g. lighting, palette or color scheme, rhythm of shapes, lines, colors, etc).
o Does the balance (or lack of balance) have a relationship with the subject or object of the work? If so, what?
o How does the balance (or lack of balance) influence your experience of the work?  Scale & Proportion
o Describe the general scale of the subject / content. If the work is representational or abstract, what is the relative scale or proportions of the represented subject to its natural referent? If there are multiple figures or elements, are they all done at the same scale?
o Do any differences in scale or proportion function to imply or define space?
o How do scale and proportion influence your experience of the work?  Repetition & Rhythm
o How are formal elements and motifs organized? Is the arrangement random or ordered?
o Do the forms, elements, and/or motifs repeat or appear only once?
o Is there a repetition of the same form from different points of view? In different scales? In different locations? o How does repetition and rhythm influence your experience of the work? Is there a sense of rhythm to the
repetition? Or does the arrangement of figures, elements, and motifs create a sense of boredom?  Harmony, Unity & Variety
o Consider how the artist has employed the concepts of unity and variety during the design process to create a sense of harmony within the work. Was it successful? Why or why not?
 Economy & Ornamentation
o Consider how the artist has employed simplicity of expressive (e.g. the use of few elements or motifs) or to
what degree he/she has opted for superfluity, and excessive ornamentation
Part II (Subjective Description & Analysis)
1) Working from the general to the specific, consider your subjective reaction to the work as a whole and to its specific subject, elements and motifs. The artist has made many choices when creating this work, can you provide any insight as to why he/she may have made those particular choices? For example, might wish to discuss the title or subject matter constrained the artist’s choices. How does the artwork make you feel? Can you point to anything specifically that makes you feel that way? What does the work seem to be saying to you? Why? Try to justify your reaction. The objective here is to give concrete form to your abstract ideas and emotional reactions.
2) While you are not required to “interpret” the work, you should feel free to offer your interpretations based on the visual evidence. You may wish to consult your textbook and on-line resources to support your interpretation of symbolic elements or motifs.

Assignment/Purpose: For your first paper assignment, I would like you to explore a theme or character within Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I want you to examine your own perspective, without the help of secondary sources or other research, but please use the online class discussions to help you frame your argument. Ultimately, you will develop a thesis statement and support your argument using quotes from the text itself. Your writing for this paper should be thesis-driven, supported by evidence from the text, and organized clearly and logically.

In formulating your essay, you should start with a question. Try to locate as many passages within the text that might help you answer that question. In examining these passages together, try to construct an answer to your question. Your essay will then include a discussion of how the passages you’ve discovered demonstrate the truth of your conclusions.

Try to avoid some common pitfalls for this paper:

1) The assignment is not asking for you to summarize the novel only—assume an audience who has read the novel as well. They will want to learn something new from you about the novel. You may have to summarize certain scenes or actions from the novel, but the paper should not be a chapter by chapter summary of the entire novel.

3) An effective attention-getter. The introduction serves also to entice your readers into your paper. Use different strategies to get their attention.

6) A clear organization. The main points of your paper should connect with each other in a way that supports the main idea. Remember that you should use transitional words, phrases, and/or paragraphs to show a clear progression of thought.
