Read the first three chapters of the book “The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life” by Erving Goffman. The reading will explain that the predominant Myth says that you just have a self and that the process of gaining individual freedom is a simple process of freeing oneself from social bonds. Goffman argues to the contrary that a sense of self and personal freedom are made in and through the use of (performance of) a complicated network of social practices. Freedom is in this sense an achievement and we do not have it unless we are successful members of social practices. He introduces the idea of a working consensus as a necessary moral underpinning for the social production of self. After reading the first three chapters and understanding them make an observation from your own about practices related to your presentation of self and relate to reading. The paper should be an observation and not a summary of the chapters
